2019.01.21 About the Setouchi Triennale

The Setouchi Triennale takes place in the picturesque setting of the Seto Inland Sea. Its theme is the Restoration of the Sea, and it aims to revitalize the island communities that once thrived in this beautiful natural environment and to transform the region into a Sea of Hope.

“Restoration of the Sea”
The Seto Inland Sea has been a vital transportation route since ancient times. Ships plying its waters stopped at different islands where their crew passed along the latest cultural and lifestyle trends. The distinctive local cultures that emerged through such interactions can still be found today. The islands’ unique identities, however, are being eroded by the shrinking and aging of their populations and the region’s diminishing vitality which have accompanied the acceleration of globalization, optimization and homogenization. Through the Setouchi Triennale, we aim to revitalize island communities that once thrived within the spectacular setting of the Seto Inland Sea, a nexus of trade and cultural exchange, and transform this region into a Sea of Hope for the world.

A Deeper Exploration of the Setouchi Region
“Setouchi Resources x Artists”
Artists will exercise creative ingenuity to ensure that visitors fully experience and enjoy the special products of the Setouchi region, including farm and marine products. Kitahama Alley, a trendy warehouse district near Takamatsu Port, will be the main venue.

Closer Connections to the World
“Setouchi Islands x Asia”
In the midst of the trend towards globalization, countries in the Asian region are taking a keen interest in the Setouchi Triennale. Artists from different Asian countries will collaborate with island communities to develop and implement various projects. The Asia Forum, which brings together well-informed people from many nations to discuss the role of art in world issues, will be further expanded.

Greater Involvement in Setouchi Communities through Food
“Island Food x Artists”
This project encourages artists to identify traditional foods from each island and add a contemporary twist. The dishes they create will let visitors experience the history and character of the islands and foster interactions with local people.

Versatile Connections with Setouchi Communities through Events/Performances
“Multi-faceted Theater & Dance”
The ratio of theater, dance and other performances in the Triennale program is increasing. New projects are also planned for 2019, including a production by Dutch artist Christiaan Bastiaans featuring the world-renowned actress Liv Ullmann, as well as an acapella choir of several hundred members, mainly from Taiwan, which will perform on various islands.
