Instead of approaching Oshima intellectually, Konoike spent her time exploring the island to experience its natural environment. In the evenings, she spoke with residents in the visitors’ room.From this process emerged works that engage the island’s rough and powerful energy.


Sing in the sea of Oshima

When things are rough or hard to understand, sink into the Earth up to your neck and sing. A video installation of the artist’s wanderings around the island on foot and by boat until she discovered a hole in the Earth and, entering therein, stuck out her head and sang.
